5 Reasons Why You Should Learn a Second Language
Career: Learning a second language will make you more marketable. Employeers will be more eager to hire you because you will be an even bigger asset to the company. You'll have an edge over the competition. The service industry accounts from more than 80% of all jobs here in the United States. More than not, the career opportunity you are after will provide some type of service to people. It will be a huge benefit to the company if they had employees that could effectively communicate with the various people that they are trying to service. Employeers think about this when reviewing job applications and resumes.
Travel: Traveling is the second most common reason people learn a second language. Sure, most countries (especially popular tourist places) offer services in English, but think about how much more enjoyable your visit will be if you knew a fair amount of the native tongue. Going to the bathroom doesn't have to be a point of the finger and you saying the word "BATHROOM" really loud (like that helps).
Self Gratitfication: It feels good to accomplish something. It feels good to do something good for yourself and better yourself. Learning a second language is just that-you're doing something good for yourself. What a confidence booster! Imagine how surprised your friends will be when you ask " Me podria dar frijoles y el arroz extra por favor?" (Could I have more beans and rice please?) while having lunch at your favorite Hispanic food restaurant.
To teach your own children: You may have absolutuly no interest in communicating with people that speak different languages, however; it is undeniable that your children will have to do so. The world they live in is completely different than the world you grew up in. English as a Second Language (ESL) is the fastest growing spectrum in the education community. That means that your child is socializing with more people that do not speak English as a primary language. On the other hand, the spectrum of English speakers learning a second language is decreasing (mostley due to the need for budget cuts). Help your child stay competitive in this changing world by learning a second language and teaching it to them. No one is expecting you to learn Spanish, French, or Chinese in a day. As you learn a little at a time teach your child.
Social Interaction: If you are interested in communicating with people form various places and love the idea of being able to speak a second language, then good for you! GO FOR IT!
